5 miles of adventure from georgetown to cumberland, maryland!.
It lists everything there is to see, as well as many close by significant landmarks with lots of historical background.
If you begin in cumberland, as i did on my 1994 and 2003 trips, then will have a slight downhill advantage. There are 75 locks on the canal, and at each lock the towpath makes a short 6 to 8 foot incline. By starting from cumberland, you get to go down each of these 75 inclines.
The towpath is not paved (the surface is typically clay and crushed stone), so it is a bit rough. Therefore, you will need to build up some calluses on your butt before starting out (no joke). The first 20 miles is the most heavily used and is a good place to practice.
Bicycle riding is permitted on the canal towpath, western maryland rail trail, capital crescent trail, and berma road - biking is not permitted on hiking trails or off trail. The surface of the towpath is for the most part an even hard-packed dirt trail.
